Podcast - Podcasting in the Middle School Science Classroom
Earlier, I wrote about presenting at a technology conference for educators in New York. I had the chance to speak about using podcasting as a instructional tool (and a powerful one) in my 7th and 8th grade science classroom.
Here is a video podcast of that presentation.
Enjoy!

I’m embarassed to admit that this is the first podcast I’ve listened to from beginning to end. I started previous ones that came my way, but they were too long or lost my interest.
I was at Gerald’s presentation at Tech Expo and was so proud of his presentation. But hearing a shorter version of it here helped me to really understand the power that podcasting can bring to teaching and learning. I could also hear the children’s podcasts better and realized how powerful this was as a way to review the challenging content of the living environment curriculum.
This podcast also allowed me another glimpse of Gerald as a teacher, his passion for his work and the strength he brings to our faculty.

Earlier this year, I howled with laughter at the rap that Gerald included in this presentation. I thought that it was incredibly clever and fun. I was thrilled to hear the girls biosphere skit and song as well. The task Gerald gave his students required the comprehension of complex science ideas, writing, creativity, performance and collaboration. When my own son studied the same unit, I was able to seek out the rap and share it with him. Thus I have evidence of the permanence of students’ products well beyond the walls of PVC and the 2006 - 2007 school year that Gerald refers to in his final comments of the presentation. I love the way that Gerald looks to involve students actively in their learning and how this self-professed “geek” taps into the fast paced technological world that is the world of our students today. Kids of today do not consider technology the geek world. It is their reality and those of us who are slow to get on board may go the way of the dinosaur.

This is an amazing presentation on podcasting. It really makes me what to learn what it is all about and utilize it with my students!! Way to go Gerald!

Great presentation at Tech Expo. But even better is seeing how kids take to learning using new technologies with teachers like you who are not afraid to meet them where they’re going and help bring them there.
